Playing in your browser
In normal standalone browser play, the game stores progress and audio preferences on your device using localStorage and does not upload browser saves. The game code does not send gameplay analytics or crash reports. It does not provide a player account, advertising or a game-operated tracking service. This does not mean that no personal data is processed: loading the game requires requests to its host.
Ordinary web and portfolio builds always use browser-local persistence. An externally supplied ytgame SDK cannot activate cloud saving, host controls or readiness notifications in these builds.
Only the separate YouTube Playables build loads the YouTube SDK and uses its cloud saves, pause/resume, audio controls and readiness notifications. It reads progress through loadData and sends complete serialized progress snapshots through saveData. Audio preferences may also remain local. YouTube’s account association, additional collection, cookies, retention and cloud deletion are governed by the platform; see Google’s Privacy Policy. Deleting browser progress does not delete YouTube cloud saves.
What is saved on your device
hollowlight.save.v1- Your character level and experience, gold and materials, equipment and upgrades, Arsenal layout and infusions, unlocked difficulties, Blacksmith progress and a pending enchantment offer, plus save version and revision.
hollowlight.save.v1.backup- A recovery copy of game progress.
hollowlight.audio- Sound effects and music volume preferences.
These original storage names are retained for compatibility. The game sets no expiry for them. They remain until removed, replaced or cleared by you or your browser. Storage can be unavailable or cleared automatically. Unsecured rewards and current session state can exist only in memory and may be lost when the game closes.
Backups you import can contain additional nested fields that the current validator preserves. Avoid adding personal information to save files. The normal game-generated save format has no player name, email or account identifier field.
The game does not use cookies, IndexedDB, sessionStorage or a service worker for saves or tracking. Your browser may cache game files separately. localStorage belongs to the website origin, so other pages and scripts on that same origin can access it; it is not isolated by the game’s URL path.
Backups you choose to create
Browser save controls let you export or download a JSON backup and import a file or pasted JSON. Import reads the selected data locally; it is not an upload. A downloaded backup remains wherever you save it, including any folder synced by your own cloud-storage software. Delete those files separately if you no longer want them.
Connections, hosting and third parties
The browser release loads its game scripts, styles and artwork from the hosting website. It uses bundled Three.js, system fonts and locally synthesized audio. No external font service, asset CDN, analytics service or crash-reporting service is configured in the game code. Its connection-check page performs checks locally and requests its page from the same host.
The portfolio opens the game as a standalone page. Its source code contains no Vercel Analytics or Speed Insights integration. These game-specific statements do not describe every other project in the portfolio or external websites you choose to visit.
Where the game is hosted on Vercel, Vercel receives connection information needed to serve requests, such as an IP address and request metadata. Hosting and security systems may process requested URLs, times, browser information, referrers and cookies already applicable to the hosting domain. The game does not control the provider’s logging, security features or retention. See Vercel’s Privacy Notice.
Production Vercel dashboard settings, security challenges, injected services, log access, log drains and retention periods have not been verified from the repository. No specific hosting retention period or hosting legal basis is asserted here. These details require confirmation by the publisher before public release.
Delete your locally stored progress
Open Settings → Delete Local Progress in the browser game. Close other game tabs and accept the confirmation to remove both the character save and recovery copy, discard the current expedition and unclaimed rewards, and reload a fresh game. This is permanent unless you have exported a backup; you can import that backup afterward. Audio preferences and exported backup files are kept. This control is unavailable in YouTube Playables and never deletes cloud saves.
The old session cannot save progress again. If deletion fails, the game reports that some data may remain and disables saving in that session. Retry deletion or use your browser’s site-data settings. To reset audio preferences too, remove hollowlight.audio manually.
To remove data manually:
- Close every game tab first so an open game cannot save progress again.
- In your browser settings, find site data for the exact website where you played and remove it. This clears saved progress and preferences and may also clear data for other pages on that website.
- For selective deletion, use your browser’s developer tools, under Application or Storage → Local Storage for that origin, to remove
hollowlight.save.v1,hollowlight.save.v1.backupand, optionally,hollowlight.audio. Remove both save keys to remove the recovery copy too. - Delete any exported backup files separately. Repeat for other browsers, profiles, devices or website origins where you played.
Clearing cached files alone does not necessarily remove localStorage. Deleting local data does not delete hosting logs or platform-held data. Exported backup files must be deleted separately. The game has no YouTube cloud-deletion control.
